On Red, White and Blue Night Volleyball Drops to Hoover in 5 with Incredible Atmosphere

Awaken Bay-Ho Gym was packed Friday night as Rock Academy hosted Hoover High School in a volleyball match that delivered an electric atmosphere from the opening serve to the final point.

The Warriors came out strong, taking the first set and setting the tone for what would become a back-and-forth battle. Hoover responded by taking the second and third sets, putting Rock Academy in a position to fight its way back.

The Warriors did exactly that, battling through the fourth set to force a decisive fifth.

The final set was everything you would expect from two competitive teams. Neither side was able to pull away, with the score eventually tied at 13-13. Hoover managed to win the final two points, taking the fifth set 15-13 and the match in a hard-fought finish.

While the result did not go the Warriors’ way, the performance showcased the continued growth and competitiveness of this Rock Academy team.

Madi Birney led the Warriors with 8 kills and 4 blocks, providing a strong presence at the net. Brooke Rodrigues, playing in just her second match back from injury, contributed 9 kills and 15 digs in an impressive return to the court.

Dani Lara helped lead the offense with 30 assists, while also serving up 6 aces.

Beyond the action on the court, the atmosphere inside Awaken Bay-Ho Gym was just as memorable. Students, parents, faculty, and staff filled the gym and created a tremendous home-court environment throughout all five sets. The student section brought energy from start to finish, with middle and high school students coming together to cheer on their fellow Warriors.

Hoover’s assistant coach, who has gotten to know the Rock Academy community over the past year, summed up the atmosphere after the match by saying it felt like a “playoff atmosphere.” He also commented on the turnout and the unity shown by Rock students throughout the match.

It was a powerful reminder of what Rock Academy Athletics is all about—not simply the final score, but the opportunity to compete, grow, support one another, and build community through athletics.

The Warriors will return home for three more matches this season, including a Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Game and Senior Night. The team will look to continue its strong play and finish the season surrounded by the same energy and support that made Friday night’s match so special.
